Park Stewardship
WORKING TO TRANSFORM THE PARK
Community Park Master Planning Workshops
We started our process with a series of community workshops to identify issues, and strategies to approach them. Our city council member has adopted our approach for many other areas of the city. Workshop information is shown here and some of the resulting projects are shown below. Our work focused on all 34 acres of Shepherd Park on both sides of Shepherd Canyon Road.

Our work in the park also overlaps with our efforts on vegetation management, traffic and pedestrian safety, pedestrian and bicycle accessibility, and design review.

Clearance of Broom by the Roots Along Railroad Trail - Liberating Natives
[Earth Day 2005] [Earth Day 2006]
We dedicated both earth day 2005 and 2006 to the Railroad Trail. In 2005 we tackled a stand of broom along the trail near the cut off to the city PWA Corporation Yard that remains clear and is now populated with liberated natives like live Oaks, and in 2006 we pulled broom around the benches near the snake road bridge

Planting of Trees to Screen Parking Lot [See photo]
As part of the recent parking lot expansion design review we defined a requirement to plant trees to screen the view of the parking lot. While we helped initiate this project for traffic and pedestrian safety reasons, may neighbors also expressed concern that this area is in a location zoned as open space resource conservation area. As they grow, these trees will help provide visual screening. The tree were dedicated to the 4 Fallen Oakland police officers in early 2009.

PROJECTS STILL TO BE COMPLETED
Connector Path by Fire Station [SC PRAC Letter] [Connector Path Map] [Photo]
Oaklnad Parks & Rec Commission unanimously supported Shepherd Canyon connector path in a March 2008 vote. The Connector Path between the Soccer Field and Parking Lot is to be build with the rubble gathered by SCHA volunteers. Saves city dumping fees while creating safer access to exsiting parking in PWA parking lot. Complements new parking lot. Waiting for park maintenance staff to schedule since March 2008. SCHA volunteers completed our end of the bargain by gathering rubble for city pick up
Bridge Between the Meadows [See plan]
The bridge will improve access between the soccer field and the upper meadows. People east of Shepherd Canyon Rd. will have a scenic path to the lower park and farther on to upper Montclair Village. It also compliments the soccer field parking solution by providing safe access to existing parking on Escher Drive and a safe walk down to soccer field. This is an Eagle Scout project, under Kevin Conn, Troop 6, Piedmont Council.
Shepherd Creek Trail
This is one of the most exciting projects we are working on. Though this was discussed as an action item in our Community Park Planning workshops, the roots go much deeper to the original Shepherd Canyon Environmental Impact Report (EIR) completed by the City of Oakland in 1975, where this trail was included along with the Railroad Trail as a mitigation requirement and condition for Shepherd Canyon’s development. Read more in the two attached documents and in the design review section of the SCHA web page.
Sediment and Erosion on Railroad Trail [See photos]
One of the perennial problems we have had on the railroad trail, is that the city storm drain pipes dump water onto the trail instead of connecting to the main storm drain line along Shepherd Canyon Road. This causes sediment to build up on the trail. One aspect of this same problem is the water drainage has created a severe rut from the railroad trail down to Shepherd Canyon Road, across from where Escher meets Shepherd Canyon Road. We hope the city can fill this rut and address the drainage problem before we have a rainy season collapse of the trail
Shepherd Canyon Measure DD Project
Shepherd Canyon Measure DD Project is planned for 2010 and will help address the soccer field flooding pictured here. The city declined to address rubble they had dumped into creek bed with their measure DD scope, so SCHA worked out an agreement where SCHA volunteers removed rubble from creek bed during dry season to complement city measure DD work.
