Infrastructural Improvements

In addition to commenting on projects for new private homes in Shepherd Canyon, we also advocate for infrastructure improvement and comment on infrastructure plans.

RESOURCES

In some cases the city has installed storm drains lines which concentrate the flow of storm water and then the storm drain pipe drains the storm water on the ground, creating erosion problems. The storm drains in general need maintenance. This city did a study the storm drains (Storm Drain Master Plan) and the excerpt from Shepherd Canyon is below

Sediment and Erosion on Railroad Trail [See photos]

One of the perennial problems we have had on the railroad trail, is that the city storm drain pipes dump water onto the trail instead of connecting to the main storm drain line along Shepherd Canyon Road. This causes sediment to build up on the trail. One aspect of this same problem is the water drainage has created a severe rut from the railroad trail down to Shepherd Canyon Road, across from where Escher meets Shepherd Canyon Road. We hope the city can fill this rut and address the drainage problem before we have a rainy season collapse of the trail

Shepherd Canyon Road Sink Hole Repair [See photos]

The section of Shepherd Canyon Road near Shelterwood has caved in several times. The problem has been identified as a storm drain related sink hole. There have been other sinkholes as well. We worked with city staff to allocate $970,000 for the repair. They have completed an investigation, and plan to go to bid this winter with a repair next spring. Their goal is to repair the storm drain line below without breaking up the pavement

PROJECTS

Paving of Shepherd Canyon Road [We got Shepherd Canyon Road paved] [See photos]

Once we got Shepherd Canyon Road paved, the next concern is that the city's storm drains are undermining the new pavement. On the west side of Shepherd Canyon Road near the dip, a city storm drain dumps out into a gully that drains right to the edge of Shepherd Canyon Road. Unfortunately a channel directs the water right to the edge of the road, undermining the sub base of the road. A new channel needs to direct the along a route well back form the road and into the storm drain inlet at the bottom of the dip on the west side. Since Oakland paving schedule means that our pavement needs to last for about 90 years, its important to address this soon. This problem is also related to our Traffic Safety Site 5.

Shelterwood Road [See photos]

Since the paving of Shepherd Canyon Road in 2004, we have been told that Shelterwood was the next road on the city PWA Staff's paving list. We keep our fingers crossed

Repair of Landslide Westover [See photos]

A land slide caused by drainage problems, casued these staris to be washed from Westover Drive down to Shepherd Canyon Road. The causes were complex, but the city helped create a new retaining wall.
